Goals
The goal of the Austin Piano School is to provide fun, affordable piano lessons that develop students who are independent readers of piano music. Independent readers are those who know rhythms, notes and musical notation well enough to read and play music at grade level on their own.
Length of Course
The Austin Piano School schedule consists of 30 lessons that generally follow the school calendar. Classes begin in September and end in May. In case a student misses a lesson, two free make-up lessons are offered at the end of the year in May. All class students may attend these two free lessons. No tuition credits are given for missed lessons. New classes of a minimum of 2 students may begin on the first of any month if space is available.

Piano Class Information
Piano classes at the Austin Piano School are small and are grouped according to age and ability. Each student has the use of their own high-quality electronic keyboard. Students learn solo music as well as ensemble music, where each student plays a different part in the same song. Classes are one hour long. Class time is spent reviewing music from the previous week, learning new music, doing theory worksheets and playing games that reinforce the musical concepts being taught. Every effort is made to present the lessons in a fun, relaxed atmosphere.
Curriculum
Group lessons at the Austin Piano School use lesson books from the Mayron Cole Music Conservatory, a graduated course written especially for group classes. Each level has approximately 200 pages of original music, recital solos, practice sheets, rhythm exercises, theory fun sheets, music history and favorite classics.
The cost of the music is included in the down payment at the beginning of the year. Students must bring their music to class each week. Locating extra copies for students who forgot their music takes time away from the other class members.
Practicing
All students must have an acoustic or electronic piano at home and are required to play the week’s music assignment twice each weekday until the next lesson. Parents must accept their responsibility in seeing that the student does the required practicing. The Austin Piano School suggests adding practicing to the student’s regular schedule of homework every day. Daily practice does not need to be long, in fact it is better for children to practice for short periods but on a regular, daily basis. Ten to fifteen minutes a day is appropriate for beginning students. While we understand that everyone has some busy days and misses occasionally, a consistent pattern of not practicing is detrimental to the student’s progress and a waste of the parent’s money!
Recitals
Group class recitals are held during the student’s piano class time on the last lesson in December and the last regular lesson in May. These recitals are fun and casual as the students play in ensemble some of the music they have learned that semester. Students may play a solo during the class recital but are not required to do so. Parents are invited. Seating is limited.
Transfer Students
Students who have taken lessons previously at another studio must audition to determine proper class placement. Students should be prepared to play one piece they already know and also to sight-read one piece chosen by the instructor. Please call to schedule an audition at least two weeks prior to the beginning of classes.
Tuition
The total annual cost of the course is $600. The required Down Payment of $60 holds a place for a student
and covers the cost of registration and music for the year. The down payment is non-refundable except when
no suitable class is available. Tuition is pro-rated for students who start after lessons have begun at a
rate of $18 per lesson. Down payment is still required.
Tuition Payment Options
The down payment and tuition balance may be paid in one of three ways:
1. One payment of $120 due September 1st, and 8 payments of $60 due on the first of each month,
October through May.
2. Two semester payments of $300 due on September 1st and January 1st
3. One Payment of $600 due by September 1st.
You may pay by check or credit card. Invoices will be sent via email.
Late Payment Penalty
A $10 late payment penalty is added to any account that is due on the first of the month
but not received by the 10th of the month. Failure to pay the late payment penalty
and the current tuition payment before the 30th of the month will necessitate dismissal of the student.
